When a water well pump short cycles, it goes through continuous, rapid periods of powering on and off. This type of behavior is not normal and is the result of a malfunction with the water well pump. Recognizing short cycling is easy but discovering exactly why the issue is occurring is not as straight forward. However, there are common scenarios that lead to the issue; here are some of them.
Water Supply
An issue with the water supply to the pump can cause short cycling. The pump functions partially based on a continual supply of water flowing through the supply line. In some instances, sediment and other debris can build up inside the supply line and create an obstruction that ultimately leads to a clog.
Once the clog forms, its obstruction causes the pressure level inside the supply line to increase, which in turn causes the pump to turn off. As the pressure level drops, the pump turns back on. Addressing the problem will require a technician to examine the supply line and remove any obstructions.
Airflow
A well pump requires just the right amount of airflow inside the pressure tank to function correctly. Too much air flow and you will experience problems. In terms of too much air, the increased air supply, known as overcharging, will eventually seep from the tank and trigger the bladder to perform incorrectly.
An issue with the bladder will cause the pump to go into shutdown mode. Once the air level inside the pressure tank lowers, the pump will trigger back on. Well owners should never adjust the pressure reading on their pressure tanks on their own, which a common reason for the issue.
Pressure Switch
One of the most common reasons why a well pump will short cycle is a pressure switch issue, especially if the pump is older. One function of the pressure switch is to send a signal to the well pump that it needs to operate. However, when the pressure switch is either giving an inaccurate reading or is not powering on correctly, it will fail to provide the appropriate signal to the pump, which can cause it to power on and off.
With an older well system, the best solution is typically to replace the pressure switch altogether, but a technician can tell you if the switch is failing or just in need of repair.
Contact a well pump repair service, like David Cannon Well Drilling, as soon as possible if you are experiencing issues with short cycling. A pump professional can accurately diagnosis and repair the issue on your behalf.

Recently we did a home remodel of the bathroom and kitchen. We needed an efficient way to haul away the accumulated debris. Dumpster rental was our practical solution for residential waste removal. Although dumpsters of various sizes were available, we chose the 20-yard model. It measured about 20 feet in length and 42 inches in height. With a capacity to hold a few tons of waste materials, this option suited us fine. We especially liked that the dumpster was delivered to our property and picked up at our specified time. By not having to park the dumpster on the street, we didn't have to worry about acquiring a permit. Less hassle and stress is fine with me. The dumpster rental also included the transfer of recyclables to a recycling facility. Next time you need your trash hauled away, why not consider dumpster rental as a practical solution?
